Obscuras

Obscuras is an anthology of written works by Malaysian writers featuring Denise Lai, Yvonne Tan, Julia Merican, and Jordan Chan. It is the first project to come out of The Key Press, an independent print and design studio that aims to reconsider publishing as an ethical medium and reimagine the book as a design object. The book is designed with circularity in mind, utilising eco-friendly printing methods and embracing low-batch productions. This design choice aims to foster intimate relationships between writers and their readers, where one inspires the other.

In Obscuras, you’ll find varied genres of writings, a product of several critical discussions and iterative developments, spanning across different ideas such as space and time, strangeness and estrangement, and the everyday act of looking and being looked at. Titles are naturally hierarchical and dominating, which is why ‘Obscuras’ is redacted from the cover, a design decision that absolves the interiors from any thematic expectations defined by its exteriors. Instead, readers are encouraged to converse on both the texts and the relationships between the texts; a freedom to depart into expanse, away from the writers’ ruminations and intentions.
